Substance Abuse What Is Addiction? Addiction is a condition in which a person engages in the use of a substance or in a behavior for which the rewarding effects provide a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue the behavior despite detrimental consequences. Addiction may involve the use of substances such as alcohol , inhalants, opioids, cocaine, nicotine, and others, or behaviors such as gambling. There is scientific evidence that the addictive substances and behaviors share a key neurobiological feature—they intensely activate brain pathways of reward and reinforcement, many of which involve the neurotransmitter dopamine. Both substance use disorders and gambling behaviors have an increased likelihood of being accompanied by mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety or other pre-existing problems. Substance use and gambling disorders not only engage many of the same brain mechanisms of compulsivity, they respond to many of the same approaches to treatment.

I love him and never realized how much he meant to me, until about a month ago. We had a messy break up and despite trying to get back i blew it off and lost him completely.
Never admited that the problem was in drugs and alcohol. He had been there for me when I had eating problems, willing to help and stood by me all this time. I tried to change many things but never got anything right. Never thought of drugs as the trigger of the arguments. Now I am sober and clean.

I was wondering because it seems like so many people have profiles online either the same site or multiple sites for lengthy periods of time. I can search Match. Also, I dated a guy for a time who almost seems to be addicted.

Addiction — both to prescription and street drugs — is a growing problem. You may have an addiction to prescription drugs if: You’re not using medications in the way they’re prescribed. You take larger doses, or take the drug more often than the prescription calls for. Or you use the medicine in a form not prescribed, such as crushing pills. You go to more than one doctor to get prescriptions for the same drug or problem.

Once an addict is convinced he or she cannot live without marijuana, the dependency becomes an obsession. When the addict uses even though he or she promised themselves they wouldn’t, this is compulsion. It is the nature of addiction that addicts don’t believe they are ill.
