Introduction The history of Ireland is an old and honorable one; steeped in warfare, family, racial and religious traditions. No other country can compete in comparison. However, the first couple of millennia of Irish history have no relevance to this dating guide. Should you wish to read more on the history of the Irish, I recommend “The Story of the Irish Race” by Seumas MacManus who gives a very vivid, and near as we can tell, an accurate portrayal of their history.

History pertinent to our purposes began in the year ; the year Charles Peterson opened a small tobacco shop in Dublin. In another of Peterson’s remarkable inventions became available, the Peterson-Lip P-Lip mouthpiece, also known as the Steck mouthpiece. So for the purpose of this dating guide, we will study Irish history, relevant to our pipe dating needs, from s until now.

Before we start with this Peterson dating guide, an observation; the Kapp Brothers were making pipes as early as the s and in many of the shapes we now associate with Peterson since the Kapp Brothers simply took there existing shapes and incorporated Charles Peterson’ s patented design into them. Explanation of Title The vagaries of Peterson’s processes do not allow for an accurate dating guide so this guide is a ‘rule-of-thumb’ guide only.

For example; Peterson did not take up the old Country of Manufacture stamps as new ones were issued so depending on which one the various workers happen to pick up, the stamps can and do cross over the boundaries of the various Eras. Some of the pipes of the Sherlock Holmes Series of the s have pre-Republic stamps, as well as other pipes produced in However, there will not be too many of these missed stamped pipes.

The music played by pipe bands generally consists of music from the Scottish tradition, the Irish tradition and the Breton tradition, either in the form of traditional folk tunes and dances or music from the Western tradition that has been adapted for pipes. Examples of typical pipe bands forms include marches, slow airs , up-tempo jigs and reels , and strathspeys.

In recent years there has been a great deal of emphasis placed on new forms, especially the suite. A good example of a suite for pipe band is Don Thompson’s composition Journey to Skye In conventional pipe band music, each section of instruments has a different role in the music. It is this complexity that provides much of the musical interest.

Fri Jan 13, 1: Sure it’s nice be able to identify the batch for the manufacturer when we’re discussing it with them but do the dates really matter beyond that? Yes, there are changes with age but the interval between noticeable differences gets longer and longer. Plus there are batch to batch differences with many that obscure the effects of age. Plus with some we don’t have a clue as to their age with the manufacturer before the tinned date stamp is applied.

Take McClelland’s for example. I always thought it was odd that the bulk tobaccos really change over the first little while but the contents of tins don’t. When Mike McNeil explained that bulk isn’t held to age but tinned blends are held to age that explained it for me. The tinned blends are further down the aging curve when they are released. So it takes longer before there is definite change. The interval between noticeable differences seems to run something like a Fibonacci sequence.

So with tins or jars 1 yo, 2 yo, 3 yo 5 yo, 8 yo, 13 yo, 21 yo And I presume that there are going to be batch differences that frustrate the effort to notice changes. But it also means that the differences between a 5 yo, 6 yo and maybe 7 yo are not noticeable and it gets worse with more age.

Clay pipes have been used in this country from the late sixteenth century onwards and were made and exported all around the World in huge numbers. They had a short life expectancy and, once broken, were of no further use and discarded. Pipe fragments survive well in the ground and they can be accurately dated from their form and decoration. Furthermore, many pipes are marked, which allows them to be traced back to their individual manufacturers. Most pipes were produced locally in small, family run workshops using regional styles and different shapes and qualities were produced for different markets.

These factors make pipes one of the most common and useful artefacts to be found on archaeological sites. Pipe fragments not only produce accurate dating material but also valuable information about trade and social status. Many pipes were also ornately decorated making them interesting objects to collect in their own right. These characteristics make pipes a fascinating field of study, with a wealth of avenues to explore.

The Society for Clay Pipe Research was founded in and is based in England but with a worldwide membership.
