Pregnant women who are referred to the Gynaecology and Day Assessment Unit, which first opened at Watford General Hospital seven years ago, have most commonly suffered from a pain or bleed. Others may have a positive pregnancy test but an initial scan found no signs of a foetus pregnancy of unknown location. Of all the women seen by the unit — about 2, in Watford and in Hemel Hempstead in — 30 per cent suffered a miscarriage. About of them were treated conservatively without surgery , had medical management and had surgery.

Just over 1, women, therefore, continued with their pregnancies, while 84 had ‘complete’ miscarriages and did not need further treatment. There were also 99 four per cent women with ectopic pregnancies last year: There were also 18 women who were diagnosed with a molar pregnancy, which could be malignant.

So far this year, 78 women were diagnosed with a pregnancy of unknown location, of which 37 were later diagnosed as miscarriages, 25 have ongoing pregnancies and six had diagnosed ectopic pregnancies. Alero Awala, lead consultant at the unit, joined in and said there had been a remarkable improvement in the service patients received since that time.

After a day-long hearing at Hatfield Coroner’s Court, coroner Edward Thomas concluded that Mr London was lawfully killed, and he had killed Mrs Crawford, his neighbour in a quiet St Albans street, while suffering from severe mental illness. The inquest heard how year-old Jonathan London was taken to the hospital’s acute assessment unit on the evening of April 29 by his mother and brother.

After blood tests, he was seen by Dr Moodliar, who told the inquest he was suffering from serious delusions and thought disturbance. But she insisted he was calm and showed no sign of aggression, and there was no reason not to refer him for home treatment by a community mental health team. Barristers for both families challenged Dr Moodliar and Ms Cusack, demanding to know why the severely ill patient had been sent home to his elderly and infirm parents.

Dr Moodliar defended her decision, explaining that the London family had been willing to look after him, and hospital admission may not have been the most appropriate treatment.

One night in April , G fell at home and lost consciousness for a few minutes. He was discharged the following day. He underwent a series of investigations including and EEG which suggested some signs of epilepsy and an MRI was booked for later in June. Just a couple of nights later, G had deteriorated and was complaining of headaches, nausea and vertigo that were so bad that his mother called an ambulance.

He was subsequently taken to Northwick Park Hospital and a CT scan was booked for the following morning. Extraordinarily, another doctor cancelled this request when visiting G the following morning. G was discharged that day with no further tests. G’s condition continued to deteriorate and when he arrived home by ambulance he collapsed on the sofa.

Watford MP officially opens state of the art scanner suite Published on: The suite housing cardiac MRI and cardiac CT scanners offers patients a unique service with access to advanced cardiac imaging technology in a refurbished setting much closer to home. The two year project to install the scanners at Watford General Hospital involved a major refurbishment in the radiology department, close collaboration between the radiology and cardiology services and the recruitment of new medical, radiographer, nursing and secretarial staff.

This is an impressive, state-of-the art facility and a really important development for cardiology locally. It was great to chat to staff and hear their enthusiasm for the new equipment and refurbished unit.
